Robin Hood and merry man

Software development is my happy space. Time melts away when I’m in the zone, coding hard. Knowing that it contributes to a product that genuinely solves problems and offers real value? That’s the icing on the cake.

Originally from England, Fen (yes, like the fens of eastern England—though we’re not entirely sure he’s from there) came to New Zealand in 1994, eventually landing in Wellington in 2003.

With a background in English literature and computer science from Victoria University, Fen brings a unique blend of creativity and logic to the world of software development.

Fen’s extensive work experience includes working with big names like Xero, Trade Me, and Hnry.

A career highlight (so far) was sneaking a Star Wars-themed ‘Easter egg’ into Trade Me - searching “May the Force be with you” would trigger the listings to scroll at an angle, mimicking the Star Wars iconic opening ‘crawl’. It may be gone now, but Fen’s memory is that it was as legendary as the Force itself. Keep an eye out—a ComplyWith Easter egg could be next.

As ComplyWith’s Principal Engineer, Fen is our coding maestro. He’s constantly refining our software and leading a talented team of developers. His typical day involves hunting for improvements (often inspired by our clever customers), scoping out projects, and diving deep into code—his ultimate ‘happy place’.

Outside of work, Fen’s an archer with a black belt in karate (he could shoot an apple off your head or throw a mean roundhouse kick). He’s also an avid reader, skilled artist, video game enthusiast, and proud owner of a husky named Lightning.

If that wasn’t enough, Fen is fluent in the art of GIFs, able to hold entire conversations in that ever-evolving language.

Fen’s passion for archery makes him both Robin Hood (minus the tights) and a merry man!
