ComplyWith’s compliance community had a fantastic day at Unplugged, our annual customer conference on 8 November 2024 at Te Papa.
Unplugged is Aotearoa’s biggest legal compliance conference. It's where people come together to connect, share and learn about legal compliance and more.
People attending Unplugged clearly enjoyed the day – giving it an average rating of 9.16 out of 10 – amazing! They described Unplugged as ‘interesting/informative’, ‘friendly and welcoming’ and our keynote speaker Kevin Biggar as ‘fantastic‘.
Here’s a quick recap of the day. We’re planning to give you more detailed articles about some of the sessions, and a thorough tech update in our next newsletter early in 2025.
Morning workshop sessions with the ComplyWith team
The morning sessions were led by our fabulous MCs, Rosa Walter Pillay and Gayle Hammersley, and supported by other members of the ComplyWith team. Here’s a quick recap of what the sessions covered.
The morning workshop and training sessions covered:
- The new Email Sender in the ComplyWith Admin module.
- The new feature of being able to view and access legal compliance obligations ‘by Activity’ in the ComplyWith Obligations Register.
- The launch of the new Linking feature - which enables you to link your legal compliance obligations to your:
- internal policies and resources,
- notes that apply to one or more legal obligations, and
- controls (if you subscribe to the Controls Reporting module).
- The life cycle of the Scope of Operations form process – designed to help ensure your Obligations Register is always nicely tailored to your organisation as it changes over time.
- An introduction to our new ComplyWith Managed subscription service which gives ongoing peace of mind that your compliance surveys will be run on time and in line with best practices, without internal resourcing challenges to run the process.
- A panel Q&A session with members of our Customer Experience and Product teams.
Afternoon sessions - Guest speakers and thought leadership
Kevin Biggar - keynote guest speaker
We were lucky enough to have the funny and inspiring Kevin Biggar as our Keynote speaker.
Kevin was a self-described couch potato before he decided to have a crack at winning one of the world’s toughest tests of endurance – the Trans-Atlantic Rowing race. He and his rowing partner won.
He’s then spent the last 20 years continuing his fascination with performance, personal transformation, and the psychology of teams.
Kevin delivered a fun and inspiring keynote on facing our challenges and taking our performance to the next level. He focused on dealing with doubts, framing a challenge, working as a team, and dealing with setbacks.
We’ve summarised a few of Kevin’s key tips below:
- Set a clear ‘winning goal’ rather than just ‘I’ll try my best’. You can’t get the best out of yourself unless you commit to a difficult goal!
- Use an image as inspiration and tap into others' experiences to get enthusiastic and overcome your doubts.
- Frame challenges as a ramp rather than a step. Steps are all or nothing, but ramp challenges focus on ‘the more I do, the better off I am’.
- Don’t do or say anything that’s going to reduce the energy of the team, and focus on what you can control (and accept the things you can’t).
- Try reframing adversity: When it’s tough for you, it’s tough for everyone else. If you can keep on persevering there can be an opportunity for you.
If ever you’re looking for a keynote speaker for an event, we couldn’t recommend Kevin highly enough.
Andrew Royle – introducing the new Ministry for Regulation
Andrew is the Deputy Chief Executive Policy at the Ministry for Regulation, which was established in March 2024.
Andrew gave us an engaging and informative introduction to the new Ministry and its focus areas, including: improving the quality of regulation, raising the capability of regulators, and making enduring change at a system level.
Introducing the building blocks of good legal compliance
The need for good legal compliance has been increasing in New Zealand and the recent successful prosecution of the former Chief Executive of the Port of Auckland will no doubt serve to accelerate this trend.
To help business leaders and their organisations understand clearly what the basics of good legal compliance look like, we’ve developed the Key building blocks of good legal compliance.
At Unplugged we introduced the Key building blocks – in a very tangible way (see images below).
We’re in the process of developing a suite of resources to help everyone communicate the Key building blocks of good legal compliance and will be sharing these with our customer community soon.
Tech update and roadmap
We had an informative session updating everyone on the ComplyWith tech roadmap and other exciting developments in the pipeline. We’ll give you a full recap on this in our first newsletter of 2025.
And there was fun too…
Unplugged is not just about learning, it’s also about everyone enjoying themselves and having a bit of fun.
Highlights included live classical guitar in the session breaks, our special ComplyWith gelato, and our annual Destination Detective competition led by our ComplyWatch Lead, Alisha Jackson.
This year’s Destination Detective quiz took us on a global adventure trying to guess the exotic locations of photos of ComplyWith drink bottles, from; Bali to Chicago, Paris to Nepal, and Central Part to Italy.
Next year’s Destination Detective will be showcasing ComplyWith drink bottles in Aotearoa’s wilderness – we’ve already received some awesome photos for this – keep them coming... we love them!
